June TNA Meeting (6/28 at 7 pm)
The June Trinidad Neighborhood Association will be held at the Trinidad Recreation Center on Tuesday, June 28th. The meeting starts at 7:oo pm.
Items on the agenda include:
- A representative of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project, the project that will be going under Mount Olivet Road
- Litter prevention programs
- Updates from the Mayor’s office, Councilmember’s office, and the Police Department
Meeting are free and open to the public.
DC Summer Meals
The DC Government’s program for free summer meals for kids and teens is underway. The Trinidad Recreation Center (1310 Childress Street NE) is one of the locations across the city where kids and teens can receive free meals during June, July, and August.
If you know of kids and teens (18 years of of age and under) that would benefit from the summer meals program, direct them to the recreation center or at one of the sites in the attached flyer.
Reward for Information: Homicide of Wayne Dailey
Mr. Wayne Dailey was shot and killed in the 1600 block of Montello Ave NE on Monday, June 20th at 2:45 am. There were news reports from WJLA and Fox on the incident but information about the incident and the victim remains limited.
The Metropolitan Police Department is looking for information that will help lead to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible. The flyer is attached (dailey_wayne) with additional details. Anyone with information about this crime in our neighborhood and that may help solve the murder is encouraged to contact MPD.
Primary Election
If you are a registered Democrat, get out and vote in the primary election today.
It only takes a few minutes yet in Trinidad voting precincts only about a third of registered voters turn out to vote in elections. Residents of the District of Columbia have only been able to vote in presidential primaries for 60 years. Celebrate that anniversary and your rights with your vote in today’s primary!
Trinidad Crafting Salon – Tonight at 7 pm
The Trinidad Crafting Salon will be held tonight at Capital Fringe (1358 Florida Avenue NE). The events starts at 7:00 pm. Feel free to bring whatever portable projects you wish to work on, participate in demonstrations of paper marbling or book making, or just spend time talking with other creative people in the area.
The event is free and no sign up is required. Drinks are available for purchase at the bar in the Logan Arts Space at Capital Fringe. You can check the event Facebook page or previous posts for additional details.
June ANC 5D Meeting
The next Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 5D will be held next Tuesday, June 14th starting at 7:00 pm. The meeting will again be held in the police station at 1805 Bladensburg Road NE. Meetings have been held outside of ANC 5D boundaries for a number of years but there is an agenda item for “Meeting Location Change” on the agenda.
The full meeting agenda is posted on the ANC 5D website. There are a few other items of note for Trinidad. First, the agenda does include a presentation by the Department of Public Works. The person tasked with DPW issues in our neighborhood recently changed so this would be an opportunity to meet the DPW Director and make note of issues that need to be addressed by the new to Trinidad staff. Second, back in October 2015 there was a very positive community meeting held to discuss development of 1164 Bladensburg Road NE. There is a project being proposed to construct 75 affordable units on a long vacant lot and community input was solicited at the meeting. There was strong support for the affordable housing with suggestions for design changes and retail space provided by attendees. There have not been community discussions since that time but the ANC will be reviewing a resolution in support of the project. A third item of note is the resolution to adopt a community grants policy for the ANC. Other ANCs do make small community grants available for projects that will benefit the community and are within proscribed guidelines. Finally, the article on the large condo conversion proposed for 1167 Morse Street elicited strong reactions. That issue and other concerns can be raised by community members at the ANC meeting. This would help put neighbor concerns to the forefront as the project continues in the review process.
The ANCs represent constituent concerns and that is most effective when we, as residents, interact with our elected Commissioners. Attending the meetings is one way that can happen. To learn more about the ANCs, you can visit the general ANC website or the ANC 5D website.
1167 Morse Street Next on the Block for Condo Conversion
A developer is seeking special variance to convert the single family home at 1167 Morse Street NE into an apartment home with three units. The structure proposed would rise to 34 feet, just under the 35 feet allowed, but with the penthouse roof shown in plans the building would be nearly 40 feet in height. The building will also be extended back significantly but the plans do not indicate how many feet beyond the neighboring single family homes this will extend.
While the regulations are that the dormers, which are architecturally significant to the existing building, be retained the developer is seeking special variance to remove those from the roof line. This would be a break in the uniformity of buildings on the block. The developer also cites that the third story addition will not have an impact on light, air, or privacy of neighboring homes.
The application also notes that the developer would extend the chimney at the neighboring house at 1165 Morse Street. One parking space will be provided for the three units.
Trinidad residents can access all plans and documents submitted for this project on the Board of Zoning Adjustment website. The case number 19326 has been assigned to this project and will be needed to search for information or to include in any letters written to the BZA concerning this project. Details on how to submit written or oral testimony about a project can also be found on the BZA website.
To request variance the developer should appear before the Advisory Neighborhood Commission 5D06 to seek input and explain the project to neighbors. They also need to appear before the full ANC 5D to present the project. Neighbors have opportunity to weigh in at these meetings, may submit written testimony about the project, and/or can attend the hearing at the BZA once a date has been set for the case to be reviewed.
It’s Almost Here!
There will be a second Saturday of the month neighborhood wide community clean-up this coming Saturday, June 11th.
Time: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. If you can’t make the whole time, that’s fine. Every little bit helps and you can check in the meeting point at any time during the two hours to collect trash bags.

Trash bags will be provided; consider bringing your own garden gloves. Dress for the weather but hopefully we will have a break from rains!

Trinidad Crafting Salon with Demos
What is paper marbling? How do you make books? Join the third Trinidad Crafting Salon on Monday, June 13th at 7:00 pm to explore these crafts, work on portable projects you have started, or converse with creative neighbors. Two of our community members will be holding demonstrations of paper marbling and book making at this event so you can observe and/or try at hand at the process.
Trinidad Crafting Salon at the Logan Fringe Arts Space (1358 Florida Avenue NE) is an open creative space whether you are interested in paper crafts including card making, stamping or scrapbooking; fiber arts like knitting, crocheting, or sewing; painting; drawing; making collages; photography or film-making; woodworking; writing; or any other craft. Join a group of like-minded creative neighbors at series of Craft Salons to nurture your creative side.
All are welcome and the events are free and open to the public. There
