Trinidad Day: August 6, 2016
On Saturday August 6, 2016, ANC Commissioner Keisha Shropshire along with DC Metropolitan Police Department and DC Department of Parks and Recreation will be hosting a Trinidad Day for the vibrant, eclectic community.
“This annual celebration is back again after a four year hiatus and with an added punch! Instead of just giving the constituents what they want, they will also get what they need, jobs! A hiring event with on the spot hiring will be part of the festivities. Some of the areas most engaging local musical acts will touch stage, in addition to activities for seniors to children. This is an event supported by neighborhood businesses. The best things in life are free -Join us!”

Beat the Heat – Extended Hours at the Spray Park
The DC Department of Parks and Recreation will be extending hours for the Joe Cole spray park. The spray park will remain open until 9:00 pm, instead of closing at 7:00 pm on the weekdays. The extended hours will remain in effect until July 29, 2016.
You can find additional information on cooling centers and other resources to assist with the heat emergency on the DC DPR web page.
Stay cool and help neighbors that may be in need of assistance during the heat wave.

Icebergs!
The National Building Museum has a new summer exhibit called ICEBERGS where visitors can explore a fantastical glacial sea designed by landscape architects, ascend to a viewing area inside the tallest berg, traverse an undersea bridge or slide down an ice chute, and learn about how design can transform spaces and lives.
ICEBERGS is built from re-usable construction materials, such as scaffolding and polycarbonate paneling. The 20′ high “water line” allows panoramic views from high above the ocean surface and down below among the towering bergs. The tallest “bergy bit,” at 56′, reaches to the third story balcony of the Museum.
The National Building Museum has Ward Days where members with a valid ID can enter the exhibit free of charge (non-member ticket prices are $16 for adults and $13 for youth/students). The Ward 5 day for free admission to the Iceberg exhibit is on July 26th from 9 am to 11 am.
Logistical details for a visit on Ward 5 Day are below:
- ICEBERGS open at 9 am on each Ward Day; other Museum exhibitions open at 10 am. Ward Day hours last from 9-11 am
- All visitors must use the main F St. NW doors between 4th and 5th Streets NW
- Your Ward Day eligibility is determined by your zip code, please bring a valid form of I.D. with zip code
- The general public will be admitted to ICEBERGS and the Museum starting at 10 am
- All visitors must check in at the Museum’s admissions desk to receive their complimentary admission wristband
July 9 – Neighborhood Clean Up
The next Trinidad Neighborhood Clean Up is on Saturday, July 9th. We will meet at Joe Cole at 10 am and move around the neighborhood from there. Bring your neighbors, bring your gloves.

June TNA Meeting (6/28 at 7 pm)
The June Trinidad Neighborhood Association will be held at the Trinidad Recreation Center on Tuesday, June 28th. The meeting starts at 7:oo pm.
Items on the agenda include:
- A representative of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project, the project that will be going under Mount Olivet Road
- Litter prevention programs
- Updates from the Mayor’s office, Councilmember’s office, and the Police Department
Meeting are free and open to the public.
DC Summer Meals
The DC Government’s program for free summer meals for kids and teens is underway. The Trinidad Recreation Center (1310 Childress Street NE) is one of the locations across the city where kids and teens can receive free meals during June, July, and August.
If you know of kids and teens (18 years of of age and under) that would benefit from the summer meals program, direct them to the recreation center or at one of the sites in the attached flyer.
Reward for Information: Homicide of Wayne Dailey
Mr. Wayne Dailey was shot and killed in the 1600 block of Montello Ave NE on Monday, June 20th at 2:45 am. There were news reports from WJLA and Fox on the incident but information about the incident and the victim remains limited.
The Metropolitan Police Department is looking for information that will help lead to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible. The flyer is attached (dailey_wayne) with additional details. Anyone with information about this crime in our neighborhood and that may help solve the murder is encouraged to contact MPD.
Primary Election
If you are a registered Democrat, get out and vote in the primary election today.
It only takes a few minutes yet in Trinidad voting precincts only about a third of registered voters turn out to vote in elections. Residents of the District of Columbia have only been able to vote in presidential primaries for 60 years. Celebrate that anniversary and your rights with your vote in today’s primary!
Trinidad Crafting Salon – Tonight at 7 pm
The Trinidad Crafting Salon will be held tonight at Capital Fringe (1358 Florida Avenue NE). The events starts at 7:00 pm. Feel free to bring whatever portable projects you wish to work on, participate in demonstrations of paper marbling or book making, or just spend time talking with other creative people in the area.
The event is free and no sign up is required. Drinks are available for purchase at the bar in the Logan Arts Space at Capital Fringe. You can check the event Facebook page or previous posts for additional details.
June ANC 5D Meeting
The next Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 5D will be held next Tuesday, June 14th starting at 7:00 pm. The meeting will again be held in the police station at 1805 Bladensburg Road NE. Meetings have been held outside of ANC 5D boundaries for a number of years but there is an agenda item for “Meeting Location Change” on the agenda.
The full meeting agenda is posted on the ANC 5D website. There are a few other items of note for Trinidad. First, the agenda does include a presentation by the Department of Public Works. The person tasked with DPW issues in our neighborhood recently changed so this would be an opportunity to meet the DPW Director and make note of issues that need to be addressed by the new to Trinidad staff. Second, back in October 2015 there was a very positive community meeting held to discuss development of 1164 Bladensburg Road NE. There is a project being proposed to construct 75 affordable units on a long vacant lot and community input was solicited at the meeting. There was strong support for the affordable housing with suggestions for design changes and retail space provided by attendees. There have not been community discussions since that time but the ANC will be reviewing a resolution in support of the project. A third item of note is the resolution to adopt a community grants policy for the ANC. Other ANCs do make small community grants available for projects that will benefit the community and are within proscribed guidelines. Finally, the article on the large condo conversion proposed for 1167 Morse Street elicited strong reactions. That issue and other concerns can be raised by community members at the ANC meeting. This would help put neighbor concerns to the forefront as the project continues in the review process.
The ANCs represent constituent concerns and that is most effective when we, as residents, interact with our elected Commissioners. Attending the meetings is one way that can happen. To learn more about the ANCs, you can visit the general ANC website or the ANC 5D website.
