Become a Reading Partner!

Reading Partners,  a nonprofit that combines the power of community volunteers with a highly effective, research-validated program that has helped thousands of children master the fundamental reading skills they need to succeed in school and beyond, is in need of volunteers to work with students at the Wheatley Education Campus in Trinidad, both this year and for next year. We are sharing this volunteer opportunity at their request.

Can you share just one hour each week with a student who is struggling to read? Become a reading partner today!

By becoming a reading partner and volunteering as little as one hour a week, you can help a child learn to read. Reading Partners provides an easy to use curriculum and on-site staff support to enable volunteers to be effective tutors. You bring your commitment and we’ll help you with everything else.

87% of fourth graders from low-income families in our nation’s capital do not read proficiently. Devoting just one hour each week to a student can make a tremendous impact. Last year, 97% of Reading Partners’ DC students improved their rate of learning in reading, and 87% narrowed their achievement gap. This year, Reading Partners is partnering with 15 local district and charter elementary schools and is opening opportunities for 750 students.

DC’s Flooding Fix Cuts Through Trinidad

DC Clean Rivers Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project aims to fix problems caused by the DistrictNE tunnel‘s too small sewer system. In times of heavy rain the system overflows, flooding streets and dumping waste water into the river. The NE Boundary Tunnel is one of several projects identified to provide a long term solution. It gives the excess water a place to go. In Trinidad, where Mt. Olivet Road and Montello Avenue experience chronic flooding, the project will go under Mt. Olivet Road. Construction is scheduled from June 2016 to April 2017. Prior to this, DC Water is conducting community outreach, presenting at TNA’s April community meeting, and surveying properties in the “zone of influence” — those buildings that may be impacted by the underground digging.  TNA has asked DC Water to provide more detailed information on what area is covered. Citizen participation is needed though the duration of the project to assure our quality of life is not negatively impacted by the effort to provide long-term flood relief. You can view the detailed presentation here:  NE Boundary Tunnel Presentation

Zoning Update on the Pierce Investments, LLC

1124-1126floridaBZA Case number 18987 was postponed until June 9, 2015. The reason for the postponement was to work with the community and the ANC. The developer was originally seeking variances from height requirements, the floor area ratio requirements, the rear yard requirements, and residential loading requirements to allow construction of a five-story multi-family building containing 52 units in the C-2-A District premises at 1124 Florida Avenue NE. In a subsequent meeting with the ANC Single Member District, the developer reduced the number of units to remove the residential loading requirement. They were still seeking height and other variances.

As meetings are scheduled, TNA will post notices so that community members can be aware of the variances requested. To date few community members have submitted letters with views in opposition or support of the project.

W.S. Jenks & Son Hardware Store

910 Bladensburg Rd NE

Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Yvonne Buggs holds a community meeting this Thursday to discuss community agreements with two local stores, Rose’s Liquor located at 830 Bladensburg Rd NE and Staples Beer and Wine  at 1364 Florida Ave NE (aka Saba One Stop). Liquor license for both establishments are up for renewal with the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA), which also gives the ANC, on behalf of the community, an opportunity to review and update their Settlement Agreements. The current agreements were made in 2009.

Per ABRA, “a settlement agreement (formerly known as a voluntary agreement) is a contract between an ABC licensee and most likely a protestant to a license. The agreement becomes a part of the ABC license. There are several enforceable and unenforceable items covered under the terms of an establishment’s settlement agreement.

Agreements typically cover items that impact the community and public safety such as noise, litter, parking and hours of operation. Mr. Yi Khen Ung from Rose’s and Mr. Jeff Jackson fro Staples are scheduled to be at the meeting, which begins at 7pm at Jenks Hardware Store. Community input is needed.
